Jack McCartan

From the University of Minnesota, Jack McCartan was the most famous of the 1960 Olympians. He was the goalie who seemingly stopped every shot thrown at him. After the Olympics he was in great demand to play professional hockey – quite a rarity for an American in 1960. He signed with the [Rangers] and played in four games in the 1959-60 season, and eight more in the next year, but he never again played in the NHL. He played minor league hockey until the early seventies then had a three-year spell with the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the WHA. McCartan was later a scout for the [Vancouver Canucks]. At the University of Minnesota, McCartan had played baseball, making All-American as a 3rd baseman, and he played for the bronze medal winning US team in baseball at the 1959 Pan American Games.
