Biography

Steve Maaranen grew up in Portland, Oregon, but later attended Claremont College, graduating in 1969. He earned a PhD from Claremont in 1976. Maaranen went on to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, working in policy planning and strategic analysis. He was also chief of the defense and space division at the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency from 1987-88.

Maaranen has written several book chapters, and edited several books on policy related to global war and nuclear weapons, including Nuclear Weapons in the Changing World, and The Future of Conflict in the 1980s. He is a frequent speaker at meetings on public policy as it relates to nuclear weapons and global conflict.
