Biography

Sergey Martynov was the world’s best Greco-Roman featherweight wrestler at the start of the 1990s, although he never won the highest prize available, an Olympic gold medal. Wrestling in the Greco-Roman featherweight class his entire career, Martynov took up wrestling in 1981 and made the Soviet national team in 1990 after winning gold at the 1989 European Junior Championships. In addition his Olympic silver medal, Martynov was World Champion in 1991 and 1993-95 and European Champion in 1992, 1993 and 1996, while taking silver at the 1995 European Championships. Martynov retired from sports after the 1996 Olympics and started to work as a wrestling coach, but died rather young in 1997.
