Although Sam Martin's contribution to Great Britain's gold medal victory in Barcelona was limited to a brief appearance in the last minute of the final his international hockey career lasted well over a decade.
As the Irish Hockey Association represents the entire island and not just the Republic of Ireland Martin, who came from Northern Ireland, played in three European Cups and the 1990 World Cup in a career that saw him play 135 times in the green shirts of Ireland.
Martin also made 94 appearances for Great Britain and as well as his Olympic gold he picked up a bronze medal from the 1984 Los Angeles Games and was a member of the British squad in Barcelona. He also won bronze and silver medals respectively from the Champions Trophy of 1984 and 1985.
He combined his playing career with the Belfast YMCA and Hollywood clubs with work as a sports development officer in Ulster and later joined the staff of the British Olympic Association.Martin was deputy chief executive of the BOA during the successful London bid for the 2012 Games but left in 2005 to become the chief executive of the Olympic Council of Ireland. He is a graduate of the University of Ulster.
