Biography

John Mayasich is one of the greatest hockey players to ever play for the Minnesota Gophers. He played from 1952 through 1955 and made All-America for three straight years, capturing the Western Collegiate Hockey Association scoring title in both of his last two years. In addition, he still holds the NCAA tournament record for the most points scored in one game – seven against Boston College in 1954. His career after leaving college was also distinguished. He declined several professional offers to continue playing amateur hockey, mainly with the Green Bay Bobcats. He played internationally for the United States more than any other man – playing on the 1956 and 1960 Olympic teams, and on the World Championship teams of 1957, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1966, and 1969. John Mayasich is remembered at his college by the annual presentation of the Mayasich Award, given to the best student-athlete on the hockey team. He went to forge a career in the radio and television industry and served a twelve year term as president of the Hubbard Broadcasting Corporation.
