Horst Mann, a 400 metre runner, had to retire during the heats at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics due to an injury. In 1955 and 1956 he was East German Champion in the 400. He was captured as a POW during World War II by the Soviets and only returned in 1949 to Germany. Mann was educated as a tool polisher and later as an engineer for ship construction in the former GDR.
