Swiss sculptor Alphons Magg was the son in a family of German ancestry. He studied in Zürich and München, and then married American pianist Mary Avery and worked as a freelance artist in München. Beginning in 1925 he produced several statues for Catholic churches in the German speaking part of Switzerland. Besides this work he produced several gravestones for prominent people and individual busts.
