Biography

Aleksandr Maltsev played his entire career from 1967-84 with one club – Dynamo Moskva. He never won a Soviet title, but was a runner-up six times (1971, 1972, 1977-80) and won a bronze seven times (1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981-83). Maltsev was selected as the MVP of the Soviet Championships in 1972 and was the leading scorer at the 1971 Soviet Championships. In 1977 he was also named as part of the best line at the Soviet Championships. Internationally Maltsev won two golds and a silver in the Olympic Games, was World Champion nine times (1969-71, 1973-75, 1978, 1981, 1983) and European Champion seven times (1969, 1970, 1973-75, 1981, 1983). He also won silvers (1972, 1976) and bronze (1977) at the World Championships and silvers (1971, 1972, 1976, 1978) and bronze (1977) at the European Championships. Maltsev was the leading point scorer at the 1970 and 1972 World Championships, and with 15 goals, was the leading goal scorer at the 1970 World Championships, being named the best forward at the 1970, 1972, and 1981 World Championships. In 1972 Maltsev took part in the legendary 1972 Summit Series, playing in eight games and the 1974 Summit Series, where he also played in eight games, but this time he also scored four goals. Maltsev also won bronze at the 1976 Canada Cup. Maltsev retired from hockey in 1984, but made a short-lived comeback in 1989, when he played one season in Hungary with Újpesti TE. Maltsev was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999.
