Biography

Ray Lumpp served in World War II and then was a star at New York University in the late 40s. He went from there to play pro basketball, mainly with the New York Knicks, but also briefly with the Indianapolis Olympians and the Baltimore Bullets. Lumpp was a 6-1 (1.85) guard whose main forte was playmaking. After his basketball days ended he was director of the New York Athletic Club for almost 50 years, and in his honor, the club had his name engraved on the gym floor. He was also active on the board of the U.S. Olympians Society, and served as an official at track meets and was, for a time, meet director of the US Olympic Invitational Track Meet. In 2012, Lumpp was honored by US basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski by being invited back to London as a special guest of the US basketball team.
