Biography

Steve Lewis had a spectacular season in 1988, when the quite unknown 19-year-old not only completely rewrote the world junior all-time list in the 400 m, but also proved his mettle in senior competition by winning the Olympic gold medal. Third at the US Olympic trials, he was not considered to be a potential Olympic medalist, with Butch Reynolds the clear favorite. In the Olympic final, however, Lewis set a fast pace in the early stages while Reynolds held back. Although Reynolds closed near the finish, Lewis held on to win in 43.87, that still (as of 2013) stands as a world junior record. Lewis won a second gold medal three days later as a member of the victorious US 4x400 m relay team that equaled the world record of 2:56.16 that had stood since the 1968 Olympics. In 1990 Lewis won the NCAA Championships and US Championships in the 400 m. In 1992 he again competed at the Olympics and won silver in the 400 and gold in the 4×400 relay, in which the US team broke the world record (2:55.74). The rest of Lewis' career was affected by injury and an ongoing viral illness and he never again competed at a major international.

Personal Best: 400 – 43.87 (1988).
