Biography

Forward Kenneth “Ken” Laufman was a member of the Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters in 1952 when they won that year’s Memorial Cup, given annually to the Canadian men’s junior ice hockey champions. With 53 goals and 86 assists in the regular season he was also the league’s top and took home the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy for his efforts. He spent the following season with the Halifax Atlantics of the Maritime Major Hockey League before settling in with the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen of the Ontario Hockey Association for a stint that lasted from 1953 through 1960. During this time he was twice sent to represent Canada in ice hockey at the Winter Olympics, winning bronze in 1956 and silver in 1960. Despite his proven goal-scoring ability, he scored only one goal and eight assists in the first tournament, playing in eight games, and four assists in the second, playing in four matches. After three playoff games with the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens of the Eastern Professional Hockey League, he spent two years with the Johnstown Jets of the Eastern Hockey League from 1960-1962. He then spent one full season with the Portland Buckaroos of the Western Hockey League, before splitting his final year as an active player between the Buckaroos and the Indianapolis Capitols/Cincinnati Wings of the newly-founded Central Professional Hockey League.
