Biography

Mark Kumpel was a forward who played college hockey at Lowell University in his home state of Massachusetts. He was chosen by the Quebec Nordiques in the sixth round of the 1980 NHL entry draft. After the 1984 Winter Olympics, Kumpel joined the Nordiques and would play parts of six NHL seasons – three with Quebec, then with the Detroit Red Wings, and finishing his career with the Winnipeg Jets. Kumpel also played for multiple teams in the American Hockey League – Fredericton Express, Adirondack Red Wings, Moncton Hawks, and Providence Bruins. He later became a hockey coach, starting with the Portland Pirates from 1998-2004, and becoming head coach of the Port Huron Beacons, and later the Walpole Express Junior A team of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League.
