Biography

Though little known today, Steve Knowlton contributed to skiing in virtually every way possible. Knowlton won the 1944 Alta Cup and the 1946 US downhill title. A Pennsylvania native, he competed on the ski team at the University of New Hampshire, but later joined the 10th Mountain Division in World War II, teaching skiing and rock climbing. After the War, he competed at the 1950 World Championships as well as the 1948 Winter Olympics. After he left competition, Knowlton became a ski equipment rep and later opened his own ski store and restaurant in Aspen. He also helped with the development of the Broadmoor Ski Area in Colorado Springs. Knowlton was instrumental in the format ion of Colorado Ski Country USA from 1963-73, an organization dedicated to the promotion of Colorado skiing, and served as its first director. He also became a big fundraiser for the US Ski Team. Knowlton was inducted into the US Ski Hall of Fame in 1975.
