Biography

Kim Gyeong-Uk (whose name is also seen as Kim Kyung-Wook) was one of the top female archers in talent-rich South Korea. First selected for the national team at age 17, she missed the Olympic Games in Seoul, but competed in the 1989 World Championships. After winning gold with the South Korean team, she bowed out to compatriot Kim Su-Nyeong in the individual event to win silver. Kim was again eliminated in the tryouts for the 1992 Olympic team, and had to wait until 1996 before her first Olympics. She made them into a complete success, winning both the team and the individual gold. The Korean's team victory at those Olympics was especially dominant, setting a new world record in the ranking round. After her successes, Kim briefly retired and married fellow national team archer Lee In-Hun. A comeback saw her competing at the 2001 World Championships, where she again won an individual silver, 12 years after her first one, as well as the team bronze medal. She then retired from international competition, and appeared at the 2004 and 2008 Games as a color commentator on Korean television.
