| After winning his Olympic silver medal in 1968, John Kinsella set a world 1,500m freestyle record in 1970 and won the Sullivan Award that year as the top amateur athlete in the United States. Kinsella won a total of six NCAA titles for Indiana and won four AAU championships. Considering all these races were 500 yards plus, Kinsella showed a surprising turn of speed in qualifying for the relay team at the 1972 Olympics.
