Charles Karle’s father was German-born and taught his son the exercises he had learned in a German turnverein. As a rower, Karle represented the Penn Barge Club, winning several national titles in the fours, accompanied by Bill Miller and Ernest Bayer. The sport of cycling unfortunately contributed to Karle’s death – he was hit by a car while training one day in Philadelphia and died as a result.
