Biography

Prior to his bronze medal win at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the bantamweight category, South Korean boxer Jang Sun-Gil was a two-time gold medalist at the Asian Amateur Boxing Championships: in 1965 he won in the flyweight division and, in 1967, he triumphed in the bantamweight category. At the 1968 Olympic tournament he defeated his first four opponents prior to being overcome by eventual silver medalist Eridadi Mukwanga. He boxed as an amateur for two more years and then turned professional in 1970, capturing the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation’s Super Bantamweight title in 1971. He maintained his belt until 1974, when he was defeated by his countryman Dong-Kyun Yum (who later became a World Boxing Council Super Bantamweight champion) and retired by the end of the year.
