At the 1949 World Championships in Buenos Aires and the 1952 Worlds in Oslo, Art Jackson won the English match by shooting a new world record both times. He was thus one of the favorites in 1952, but one miss out of 400 cost him the gold medal and he finished third. Jackson had an excellent record at the 1951 and 1955 Pan American Games, winning seven gold medals (four individual), one silver, and one bronze. He won the individual rifle 3 positions as well as the rifle prone in both Games and was on the gold medal winning teams in rifle 3 positions (with Emmett Swanson, Verle Wright, Jr., and the non-Olympians August Westgaard and Allan Luke), rifle prone (with Emmett Swanson and the non-Olympians August Westgaard and Allan Luke), and 300 m high power rifle 3 positions (with Emmett Swanson, Verle Wright, Jr., Robert Sandager, and the non-Olympian August Westgaard). Additionally Jackson won silver in the 300 m high power rifle 3 positions in 1951 and bronze with the army rifle 3 positions team (with Verle Wright, Jr., Robert Sandager, Emmett Swanson and the non-Olympian August Westgaard) in 1955. |
