Biography

Douglas Hume sailed as part of his father’s crew on the yacht Johan in the 6m class event at the 1948 Games. He graduated from Glasgow University with a degree in mechanical engineering and joined the family engineering firm of James Howden & Company who specialised in the handling of air and gasses.

Hume became managing director of the company in 1963 and when he retired in 1997 profits had risen from £5,000,000 to £50,000,000. After his wife’s battle with cancer Douglas Hume set up a charitable fund to help terminally ill patients.
