Biography

Phil Housley played defense for 21 years in the NHL, starting out with the Buffalo Sabres, but playing for seven teams in all, including the Winnipeg Jets, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, and Toronto Maple Leafs. During the 1994-95 player lock-out, he played for Zurcher SC in the Swiss League. He won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 1983, and played in seven NHL All-Star Games. When he retired at the end of the 2002-03 season, Housley was the all-time leader for NHL points scored by an American-born player, with 338 goals, 894 assists, and 1,232 points, a record since broken by Mike Modano. Housley never played on a Stanley Cup Champion, and holds the NHL record for having played the most games, 1,495, without ever winnig the Cup. Internationally, he represented the US at the 1982 World Junior Championships, the 1985 and 1988 Canada Cups, and the World Championships in 2000, 2001, and 2003. Housley was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004. He later coached high school hockey in his native Minnesota with the Stillwater Ponies.
