Kathy Heddy was a distance freestyler who swam the 400 free at the 1976 Olympics. Heddy’s greatest meet came at the 1975 Pan American Games where she won four gold medals in the 400 freestyle, 200 and 400 IMs, and the 4x100 freestyle relay. Her daughter, Lolo Silver, later played for the US national team in water polo. In 2011 Silver also noticed something different about Kathy Heddy-Drum’s left eye, which turned out to be a malignant tumor behind the eyeball. At surgery, her eye had to be sacrificed and she would undergo both radiation and chemotherapy, but survived the ordeal.
