Jim Heiring competed for the US as a walker multiple times in international events, with a best placement of sixth in the 1985 World Indoor Games 5K walk, and sixth in the 1983 Pan-American Games 20 km. walk. He competed in the World Cup in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, and 1987. He also competed at the 1983 and 1987 World Championships. Heiring won 17 AAU and TAC walking championships.
