Slim Halderson had a long and distinguished ice hockey career as a forward that began in earnest in 1918 when, as a member of the patriotically named Winnipeg Ypres, he made it to the finals of the Allan Cup championship. Although the trophy, bestowed annually to the men’s senior amateur ice hockey champions in Canada, eluded him that year, he eventually captured it with the Winnipeg Falcons in 1920, which allowed them to represent their home country in the sport at that year’s Summer Olympics. The squad took the gold medal at the tournament and Halderson did his part with nine goals scored in three games. Upon his return he spent one season with the Saskatoon Crescents of the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League prior to turning professional in 1921 with the Victoria Aristocrats of the Pacific Coast Hockey League.
Halderson stayed with the Aristocrats the following year when they became the Cougars, and later won the Stanley Cup with them in 1925. After failing to defend this honor in the following year’s playoffs he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League after only three games of the 1926-1927 season. After two seasons in the Canadian-American Hockey League with the Quebec Castors and the Newark Bulldogs, he spent the rest of his career in the American Hockey Association, mainly with the Kansas City Pla-Mors (1929-1933) and the Tulsa Oilers (1933-1936). His final 15 matches were played with the Wichita Skyhawks from 1936-1937, after which he worked as an accountant. Following his death in 1965 he was made an Honoured Member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
