Biography

Nellie Halstead set three world records in the 400 metre dash in 1931 and 1932. At the 1934 British Empire Games in London she was a member of the English relay team, which won the gold medal in the 110-220-110 yards relay. On the same occasion she won silver in the 220-110-220 yards relay and bronze individually in the 220 yds. She was also a pioneer in women’s football in England and played for one of England’s first teams, the Preston Ladies FC.
