German Georg Hackl was the first luger to have won medals at four consecutive Olympics in singles luge (and only one thru 2006). After a silver medal in 1988 at Calgary, Hackl also became the first man to defend the Olympic luge singles title, winning in both 1992 and 1994, and he repeated that triumph for a three-peat in 1998. He is one of only three men (Gillis Grafström in individual figure skating and Ulrich Wehling in Nordic combined) and three women (Sonja Henie in individual figure skating, Bonnie Blair in 500 speed skating, and Claudia Pechstein in 5,000 speed skating) to have won the same event at three consecutive Winter Olympics. In addition to his Olympic successes, Hackl was singles World Champion in 1989, 1990, and 1997, and also won the luge World Cup in 1989-90. In 1993, he was second in the World Championships and the World Cup, after having placed third in the World Cup in the Olympic year of 1992. At the Salt Lake City Olympics, Hackl finished second, defeated by Armin Zöggeler of Italy. However, this made him the first Olympian to win a medal in the same individual event at five consecutive Olympic Games. Hackl competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics but did not medal. |
