Biography

Between his fourth-place debut at the 1983 World Championships and his ninth-place swan song at the 1988 Summer Olympics, Doug Hamilton never failed to reach the podium in the quadruple sculls at a major international tournament. He took bronze at the 1984 Summer Olympics (with Mike Hughes, Phil Monckton, and Bruce Ford), gold at the 1985 World Championships, and bronze at the 1986 and 1987 editions (all alongside Paul Douma, Mel LaForme, and Robert Mills). He graduated from Queen’s University in 1980 and obtained law degrees from Queen’s and the University of London in 1983 and 1987 respectively. He retired after the 1988 Games and took up environmental and health and safety law, fields in which, as of 2013, he continues to practice with McCarthy Tétrault. He has also served as the Vice-President of High Performance at Rowing Canada and served on several major bid committees in Toronto, including for the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2015 Pan American Games (which the city won). His wife, Lynn Polson, played basketball for Canada at the 1984 Summer Olympics while his sons, Dougie and Freddie, have represented their country in international ice hockey.
