Biography

Dietmar Haaf was the dominant West German long jumper in the 1980s and 90s, but failed to reach the final at Barcelona in 1992. He also did not make the final at the 1987 World Championships, but placed fourth in 1991, when Mike Powell jumped to the current world record (as of 2014) with 8.95 metres just 4 cm ahead of Carl Lewis. Haaf won the 1990 European Championship, and was eliminated in the qualifying rounds in 1986 and 1994. At the European Indoors he won the gold medal in 1990 and 1994, placed fifth in 1988 and 1989, and also took part in 1992. Domestically he won seven consecutive titles from 1986-92, was also runner-up in 1994 and 1996, and was German Indoor Champion in 1986, 1988, 1990-92, 1994, and 1996. Haaf studied machine engineering.
