Biography

Aleksey Gusarov began his hockey career with SKA Leningrad in 1982 and in 1984 joined CSKA Moskva, where he played until 1990. With CSKA Moskva Gusarov won five Soviet titles in a row (1985-89) and six consecutive European Champions Cup titles (1985-90). In 1990 Gusarov joined the Quebec Nordiques and played there for the next 10 seasons, although the club changed name and location in 1995, later known as the Colorado Avalanche. With the Avalanche, Gusarov won a Stanley Cup in 1995-96. After leaving Colorado in 2000, Gusarov played one more season with the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues before retiring. Internationally besides his two Olympic medals, Gusarov was on the World Champions three times (1986, 1989, 1990) and was a five-time European Champion (1985-87, 1989, 1991). He also won silvers at the 1987 World Championships, 1990 European Championships, 1987 Canada Cup, and won bronzes at the 1985 and 1991 World Championships.
