A native of Scotland, Adam Gunn of the Buffalo YMCA became a US citizen in 1899, and won the AAU All-Around championship in 1901 and 1902. In the 1904 Olympic event he was leading the competition, a forerunner of the decathlon, after seven events but finally ended up 129 points behind the Irishman, Tom Kiely.
