Bill Graber won the combined AAU/Olympic Trials pole vault in 1932, setting a world record of 4.37 (14-4⅜) in the process. En route he had also equaled the previous world record of 4.30. He was NCAA pole vault in 1931 and was favored at the 1932 Olympics, but performed below form and failed to win a medal. He also won the NCAA title in 1933, representing Southern Cal, and won the AAU meet again in 1934. He again won the Olympic Trial in 1936, tying for first, but also failed to medal in Berlin.
