Goebel continued to compete through 2006, placing second at the 2003 World Championships, but failed to qualify for the 2006 US Olympic team and retired. The hallmark of his skating was his jumping, as he was the first skater to land a quadruple Salchow in competition and the first person to successfully land three quads in one program.
