Biography

Andreas Goldberger debuted in the ski jumping World Cup when only 18 years old. He quickly rose to the top, winning the Four Hills Tournament and overall World Cup in 1993. He repeated this performance in 1995, and collected medals at the 1993 World Championships and 1994 Olympics. His first major international title came in 1996, when he won the ski flying World Championships. Earlier, he had become the first person to jump further than 200 m, but Goldberg fell after landing, denying him the World Record. When he admitted to using cocaine in 1997, the Austrian federation suspended him for six months. Goldberger briefly assumed Serbian citizenship to continue jumping, but was eventually allowed to compete again for Austria. He continued competing until 2005, but with less success than before, never again winning a World Cup event. In 2001, he nevertheless won another world title, with the Austrian team on the normal hill.
