Biography

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Glenroy Gilbert formed, along with Robert Esmie, Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey, the best 4x100 relay team in the mid-1990s. Gilbert made his début at a major international championship at the 1988 Olympics, where he was 21st in the long jump. At the 1990 Commonwealth Games, Gilbert was eighth in the long jump and, at the 1992 Olympics, he reached the semifinal with the Canadian 4x100 relay squad. Gilbert won his first medal at the 1993 World Championships, when the Canadian 4x100 m relay team finished third. At the 1994 Commonwealth Games, Gilbert won gold in the 4x100 and was fifth in the 100. Gilbert also competed in bobsleigh at the 1994 Winter Olympics, where he finished 15th in two-man and 11th in four-man. In 1995 Gilbert won a gold medal in the 100 at the Pan-American Games and was a member of the gold medal winning Canadian 4x100 relay team at the 1995 World Championships. At the Atlanta Olympics the Canadian relay team was not favored, despite having won almost all the recent titles available, because they had done it in the absence of the United States. In the 4x100 relay final the Canadian team beat the USA by almost half a second to establish itself as the best relay team in the world. Gilbert also reached the quarterfinals of the 100 at the 1996 Olympics. Gilbert and the Canadian team again won gold at the 1997 World Championships and the 1998 Goodwill Games, but again without racing the United States. At the 1999 World Championships the Canadian team was disqualified in the semi-final and Gilbert ended his running career after the 2000 Olympics, where the Canadians were eliminated in the semis. After his retirement Gilbert worked for a short time for CBC radio in Ottawa and then coached the Canadian 4x100 relay team.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.10 (1994); LJ – 8.12i (1989).
