Biography

Richard Gates sailed in the Star Class at the 1972 Olympics, as crew for [Alan Holt]. They continued to sail Star events after the 1972 Olympics, but the class was temporarily dropped from the Olympic Program in 1976. Gates was a graduate of The Ohio State University, earning both a bachelor’s and masters’ degree in mechanical engineering. He and Holt competed for the Corinthian Yacht Club and later formed their own company, Spartech, which designed and manufactured Star Class masts.
