The painter William Fisher was born in the United States and studied in Brooklyn, but remained in Europe for a few years after World War I and studied painting in Rome for one year, before returning to the United States. In the 1920s Fisher became a successful illustrator. It is not quite clear why he is listed in the official lists of the 1948 London Games as British.
