Biography

West German track and field athlete Erika Fisch finished fourth in the long jump at the 1956 Melbourne Games but could not start in the 4x100 relay due to an injury. Therefore the German relay team lost its medal chance and finished only sixth in the final. Fisch won a bronze medal in the 80 m hurdles and silver in the 4x100 relay at the 1962 European Championships. In 1954 she finished fourth in the long jump and was 12th in 1958. Domestically Fisch collected 18 titles in the long jump, the hurdles and the 4x100 relay, along with several podium finishes in the pentathlon between 1952 and 1964. She also set one world record in the 4x100 relay, at Dresden in 1956. In 1964 she was awarded the Rudolf-Harbig-Gedächtnispreis (Memory Prize). Her husband was teacher Günter Claus and their daughter, Angela, became a nationally successful sprinter and hurdler. In 2009, shortly before her 75th birthday, the city of Hannover, her hometown, named the all-around sports complex at Niedersachsenstadion (Lower Saxony Stadium at the Sportpark Hannover) in her honor, as the Erika-Fisch-Stadium.
