Biography

Charly Fasel was a goaltender who played for HC Davos from 1921-29 in the Swiss National League A, helping them win Swiss titles in 1926-27 and 1929, after a business apprenticeship took him to Davos. On 10 December 1927 he became one of the first European goaltenders known to have worn a face mask during a game. He was in goal for them at the 1925 Spengler Cup, winning a silver medal, and helping them win the title in 1927. In addition to his 1928 Winter Olympic appearance, Fasel was on the Swiss team at the European Championships from 1924-26, helping them win gold in 1926 and bronze medals in 1924-25. He played four games in goal for Switzerland at the 1928 St. Moritz Olympics, recording two shutouts. After his playing career ended, he operated a small shop selling tobacco, cigars, and souvenirs. In his retirement he became an avid golfer in Ascona.
