Biography

Born in Colombia to Canadian parents, Clay Evans moved to the United States as teenager and developed his swimming skills in California. He represented Canada at the 1972 Summer Olympics, being eliminated in the opening rounds of the 100 metre backstroke and the 200 metre individual medley, before entering the University of California, Los Angeles on an athletic scholarship. There he was a four-time All-American, but returned to Canada for the 1976 Summer Olympics, where he helped Gary MacDonald, Steve Pickell, Bruce Robertson, and Graham Smith take silver in the 4x100 metre medley relay and finished sixth in the 100 metre butterfly. He took up coaching after the Olympics, but swam for Canada at the 1979 Pan American Games, where he won bronze in the 100 m butterfly. He then trained for the 1980 Summer Olympics, but stayed home after Canada joined the boycott of those Games. He returned to UCLA for a graduate degree in architecture and helped found the Southern California Aquatic Masters Swim Club, with which he has been heavily involved in the promotion and coaching of masters-level aquatic events. He received the U.S. Masters Swimming Coach Of The Year Award in 1992.
