Born in Jamaica, Robert Esmie formed, along with Glenroy Gilbert, Bruny Surin and Donovan Bailey, the best 4x100 relay team in the mid-1990s. Esmie was seventh in the 100 and won bronze in the 4x100 relay at the 1993 World Championships, while at the 1994 Commonwealth Games he won gold in the 4x100 metre relay. Esmie won bronze in the 60 at the 1995 World Indoor Championships and was again a member of the gold medal winning Canadian 4x100 m relay team at the 1995 World Championships. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics the Canadian relay team was not favored, despite having won almost all the titles available during the last couple of years, because they had done it in the absence of the United States. In the 4x100 m relay final, however, the Canadian team beat the United States by almost half a second to establish itself as the best relay team in the world. Esmie and the Canadian team again won gold at the 1997 World Championships.
Personal Best: 100 – 10.10 (1997).
