In 1992, she returned to win three individual gold medals, in the 100 metre backstroke, the 200 metre backstroke, and the 400 metre individual medley. In 1996 at Atlanta, Egerszegi won her third consecutive gold medal in the 200 backstroke, making her only the second swimmer, after Dawn Fraser in the 100 free, to win the same event at three straight Olympics. She is the only female Olympic swimmer to have won five individual gold medals. At the European Championships she won three silver medals in 1989 and three gold medals in 1991 and 1993. At the 1991 World Championships, she won both backstroke events. She set two world records during her career, one each in the 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke. |
