Biography

Harry DeBaecke was the stroke oar for the Vesper eight which won the first Olympic eight-oared gold medal. In 1900 he also won the single sculls championship at the Schuylkill Navy Regatta. In the first decade of the 20th century he was several times a national champion in a very long career. In 1910 he bridged two generations of American rowers when he sat in the seat behind John Kelly, Sr. for the Vesper eight that finished third at the nationals. He later coached the Vesper crews from 1922-25.
