Together with his elder brother Jörg, Claus Dethloff started a sports career as a hammer thrower and took part in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, the 1991 and 1995 World Championships, and the 1990 and 1994 European Championships. In 1995 he won the German Championships in hammer throw and seven more titles in the rare discipline of weight throwing. Dethloff’s father, Volker, also was a hammer thrower. Claus Dethloff later became a PhD in psychology. He was a research assistant and spent several years freelancing in market research and with consulting firms, focusing on consumer behavior, staff training and organizational development. He also became a lecturer for the “psychology of service” at the Institute of Economic and Social Psychology at the University of Cologne and is regarded in Germany as a recognized service expert.
