Gerry Davey

London-born Gerry Davey went to Canada as a boy and learned his hockey in Port Arthur, Ontario, before returning to England as a teenager in 1931. A London newspaper assisted him in joining the Princes Club and this was the beginning of a long and distinguished career in British hockey. He won his first international honors when only 16 and went on to win more than 100 international caps. At the 1936 Olympics, Davey was Britain’s top scorer with a total of seven goals including a hat-trick against Czechoslovakia. Most importantly, he scored after only 20 seconds in the crucial semi-final match against Canada. He later featured prominently in Britain’s victories at the European Championships in 1937 and 1938. After his initial introduction to the Princes Club, Davey subsequently played for Queen’s Club, Streatham and Wembley Lions; He also played and coached for Falkirk in the Scottish League. He made a second Olympic appearance in 1948 and then refereed for several years in the English National League.
