Biography

Steve Colgate attended Yale, graduating in 1957 and then spent two years as an Air Force officer. He sailed for the New York Yacht Club. After the Air Force, Colgate worked in a boat supply store in New York City, before he and his wife launched Offshore in 1964. Offshore was a sailing instruction company, with multiple boats, branches, and highly qualified instructors. Colgate was President of the International Sailing School Association from 1997-2006. In 1996, Colgate and his wife, Doris, received Sail Magazine’s Industry Award for Leadership. He is also the recipient of US Sailing’s President’s Industry Leadership Award (1999) and in 2003 received US Sailing’s Timothea Larr Award for leadership and excellence in sailing education. As a racer, Colgate has been a competitor for almost six decades and raced in almost major race in the world.
