Biography

Gary Conelly swam for Indiana University where he was a 15-time All-American. In 1973, Indiana honored him with the Balfour Award for excellence in swimming, leadership, and scholarship. He also competed for the Gatorade Swim Club. At the 1972 Olympics Conelly swam in the heats of both the 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle relays, but because of the rules in place in 1972, he was not eligible for gold medals.

Conelly later became a renowned college swim coach. He started coaching with the West Florida Lightning Aquatics USS team in Largo, Florida. After seven years in Largo, he became a graduate assistant coach at the University of Kentucky. In 1991 he became the head women’s coach at Kentucky and in 1992 he was named head coach of both the men’s and women’s squads. Conelly has coached the Wildcats for over 20 years. He is a member of the Indiana Swimming Hall of Fame.
