Biography

Goalie William "Bill" Cockburn was captain of the Winnipeg Hockey Club in 1931, the year that they won the Allan Cup as Canadian senior men's national ice hockey champions. He reprised this role when the team was sent to represent Canada at the 1932 Winter Olympics, the only time in Olympic history that Team Canada has been captained by a goaltender. Outside of ice hockey, he also excelled at baseball and rugby during the summer months. His hockey career began in 1920 as a member of Winnipeg's junior and senior Tammany Tigers, with whom he also played baseball and lacrosse, until 1926. After a season with the Montreal Victorias, he returned to Winnipeg hockey and also managed the Dokey Tigers, a senior men's baseball team, for the 1931-1932 season. After he retired as a player, he coached junior and senior-level ice hockey for many years in Winnipeg. As a member of the 1931 Winnipegs, he was made a member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He is also a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame on his individual merits.
