Biography

Billy Cleary played for Harvard f rorn 1953 to 1955 and set school records for scoring, which were later broken by his brother, Bobby. But he also set national records in 1955 for: points in a season (89); goals in a season (42); goals in a game (6); and assists in a game (8). He led his Harvard team to a third place finish in the NCAA tournament in that year Cleary represented the United States four times internationally at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, and at the 1957 and 1959 World Championships. Bill Cleary was also very successful in business, setting up a casualty and property company with his brother. The Cleary brothers had missed the Olympic try-outs through business commitments and their late call-up to the roster was originally very unpopular with their teammates. In addition, he served as Harvard hockey coach from 1971 thru the 1990s, leading them to an NCAA Championship in 1989. He also served as Athletic Director at Harvard into the 1990s. Cleary was named by hockey historian, Kip Farrington, as the top center in Harvard hockey between 1946 and 1970.
