James Ormsbee Chapin was a painter and illustrator who studied in New York and Antwerp, specialized in portraits. After all there were five of his portraits of well-known personalities which made it to the front page of the prestigious Time Magazine. His son, James Forbes Chapin (1919-2009) was a well-known jazz drummer in the 1940s to the 1960s, and his grandson Harry Chapin Foster (1942-81), better known as Harry Chapin, became a well-known songwriter and folk singer (Cat’s in the Cradle), who died in a car crash at the age of 38.
