Biography

George Chiga was Canadian heavyweight champion in wrestling in 1936-37, representing the Olympic BW Club of his hometown Regina, Saskatchewan. He also played football for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as a lineman. This got him recruited by Oklahoma State which he attended after the Berlin Olympics, where he played football and wrestled, finishing second in the 1940 NCAA championships in wrestling, and was named All-America. Chiga then fought for Canada in World War II, but after the war settled in the United States. He had earned a law degree and practiced law for a bit before becoming a judge. But he later became an Oklahoma rancher and cattle breeder, developing a popular bloodline of Red Angus cattle. In 2006 Chiga was inducted into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame.
