While at Wichita State, Preston Carrington twice placed in the NCAA long jump – third in 1970 and sixth in 1971. He was a useful hurdler and all-round jumper. He qualified for the 1972 Olympic team with a third-place at the Final Trials. At the Olympics, he was second in the qualifying with a mark which would have won the silver medal (his PR), but could not duplicate that in the final.
